America's Most Charming Towns and Villages  4th ed. 2001 Larry T. Brown. (Open Road)  ISBN:189297536X
Brief and readable descriptions of 200 towns, with lodging (inns and  B&Bs - you won't find chain motels listed)  and restaurant recommendations, a local tourism information source, and one or two special sites to see. Amazon

Travel Guides Page at Amazon  Amazon.com  has gathered all the travel guidebook series on one page.  Click on the name of any series  and  it will display all the titles. It beats looking by destination.  In terms of  our perspective, Fodor's Road guides 2001 editions were a vast improvement over previous efforts and added more detailed pricing information, as well as quite a few URLs for attractions.

The Zoo Book 1994 Allen W Nyhuis ISBN:0917120132
Getting a bit dated, this book still gives the flavor of most of the major zoos, describing featured exhibits, kid-oriented facilities, and location and collection details.  Each chapter also lists other zoos in the state, with special chapters on best exhibits for various animals, other good places to see animals, selected foreign zoos, and lists of best exhibits about specific animals.

Complete Guide to America's National Parks 11th ed, 2001 National Park Foundation ISBN:-679007695  Brief synopsis of facilities and special attractions of every National Park, with contact information and tips and hints for making the most of each park.

The Insiders Guide to Civil War Sites in the Eastern Theater 2nd ed. 1997 Michael P. Gleason ISBN:1573800198  Features 21 highly detailed driving tours of battlefields and the campaigns that led to them.  Includes descriptions of museums and buildings along the way, as well as the landscape along the route and plenty of sidebars on personalities and suggested side trips.

Inside America:  The Great American Industrial tour Guide 1997 Jack & Eunice Berger ISBN:096553061  Spiral bound guide to tours of factories, breweries, postal distribution centers, hatcheries, newspapers,  and other places where work is done.  State-by-state, alphabetical by city.  Even the authors state that, before you plan one of these tours, you must call ahead.  Tours and even facilities open and close constantly, and many require reservations.

Woodall's North American Campground Directory. Annual editions
There probably isn't another segment of travel publications dominated by one name as much campground and RV directories are by Woodall's.  Quite simply the most exhaustive collection anywhere.  Even better than the Yellow Pages, because it includes government campgrounds not found there and pretty much leaves out long-term mobile home parks.
